Forest Moon Bed & Breakfast’s Inn History

In 1970, Harry Gougar and his family came to Northwest Wisconsin to find a site to build a family home. They purchased 160 acres of farm land from two individuals known as "Doc and Zim” in the Seeley Hills area of Sawyer County. The land is located in the heart of several Northern Wisconsin forests. Harry, who never built a log home prior, along with his family, started a venture which would last for eight years. When completed, the Gougar family had created a most unique log home using the trees on the property for the log walls, oak flooring and pine trim. The rocks cleared from the land went into making the two story natural stone fireplace in the living room, a chimney and a fireplace in the basement.

The location was great, but little did Harry Gougar realize just how great it would become. Harry built his home in the middle of what was to become a world class trail system. Today, the trails located only a short distance from this log home - including the Birkebeiner Ski Trail and the Seeley Hills Cluster of the Chequamegon Area Mountain Bike Trail System – play host each year to such well known events as the American Birkebeiner Cross Country Ski Race, the Seeley Hills Classic and the Chequamegon Fat Tire Mountain Bike Festival.

In addition to its proximity to the Birkie Trail, Sawyer County Forest Seeley Hills Trail and CAMBA Hwy OO Mountain Bike Trail Head, the B & B’s convenient location between Hayward, WI and Cable, Wisconsin is also close to popular area lakes, the Namekagon River and numerous shops, tourist attractions and restaurants.

Today, the inn sits on 8 acres of a clearing in the forest and is called Forest Moon B&B. Located on popular County Highway "OO", the Inn is likely the most centrally located lodging choice for skiers, bicyclists, snowshoers, hikers, golfers and vacationers who want to appreciate all the outdoor activities and natural beauty enjoyed in the Great Northwest of Wisconsin. On cross country ski maps and snowmobiling maps, Seeley, WI and Forest Moon Bed & Breakfast are right in the middle of the fun! The Inn is also part of the Trail Town USA Area of Cable, Wisconsin as designated by the American Hiking Society.
